Healthy eating is essential for a child’s good health, growth and development. Healthy eating in childhood reduces a child’s chance of developing a range of health problems as they get older. To stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight, children need to be physically active and eat the right amount of nutrients to balance the energy they use.
A healthy, balanced diet includes foods from all five food groups: fruit, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy; however, the amount each child needs depends on their age. Children should limit their intake of foods that contain saturated fat, added salt and added sugar. They should also be encouraged to choose water to drink. You can find out more here.
Early childhood education and care services are also legally obliged to have a healthy eating and nutrition policy in place that meets the requirements of the National Quality Framework (NQF). You can find out more here.
